Find Expert Care for Your Active Life on the Upper East Side

If an injury is keeping you off the field, out of the studio, or away from performing, Dr. Stephanie Buza offers board-certified orthopedic care built for how you move. A former classically trained ballet dancer herself, she brings sports medicine, hip preservation, and performing arts medicine training from Hospital for Special Surgery to Manhattan’s athletes, dancers, and performers — with a whole-patient approach that considers your training, technique, and goals, not just your diagnosis.

Meet Dr. Stephanie Buza

Dr. Stephanie Buza is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, hip preservation, and performing arts medicine. She completed fellowships in sports medicine and shoulder surgery and hip preservation at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). She also serves as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Orthopedic Director of the HSS Performing Arts Medicine Collaborative.

At her Upper East Side office in The Pavilion at 541 East 71st Street, Dr. Buza brings this training to athletes, dancers, performers, and active New Yorkers dealing with injuries that interrupt how they move. A former pre-professional, classically trained ballet dancer herself, she understands the demands movement can place on your body. Her whole-patient approach to orthopedic care considers your diagnosis alongside your activities and goals, with non-operative treatment always prioritized when appropriate.

Our Treatment Options on the Upper East Side

Hip Preservation Surgery

Hip preservation focuses on treating the problem while maintaining your natural hip joint. Depending on your condition, Dr. Buza may use arthroscopic or open techniques to correct structural abnormalities, repair damaged tissue, or restore joint mechanics. Treatment may address hip impingement, labral tears, cartilage injuries, and tendon or soft tissue damage.

Knee Arthroscopy and Meniscus Surgery

When a meniscus tear causes persistent pain, catching, or locking, arthroscopy allows Dr. Buza to see and treat the damage through small incisions. Repairable tears may be secured with sutures so they can heal. When repair isn’t appropriate, unstable damaged tissue can be carefully trimmed while preserving healthy meniscus whenever possible.

ACL Reconstruction

A torn ACL can leave your knee feeling unstable during cutting, pivoting, jumping, or quick changes in direction. ACL reconstruction replaces the damaged ligament with a tissue graft positioned at its natural attachment points. Structured rehabilitation then helps the graft heal while you progressively rebuild knee strength, control, and confidence.

Tendon Repairs

A severely torn knee tendon can disrupt the connection that allows your muscles to move and control the joint. Dr. Buza can repair the damaged tendon with strong sutures and anchors and, when necessary, secure it back to bone. Rehabilitation gradually restores motion before progressing to strengthening and higher-demand activity.

Orthopedic Performing Arts Medicine

For dancers and performers, getting back to basic movement may not be enough. Dr. Buza leverages her orthopedic expertise with her background as a classically trained ballet dancer to understand your performance demands. Her treatment considers biomechanics, strength, joint function, and the precise movements you need for rehearsals and long-term participation.

Non-Operative Care

Surgery isn’t automatically the first answer. Depending on your condition, Dr. Buza may recommend corticosteroid injections, bracing, orthotics, activity modification, or conservative strategies. These approaches can help manage pain, inflammation, instability, or arthritis while supporting your ability to remain active and potentially avoid or delay an operation.

Physical Therapy Referrals

Physical therapy can help address strength, mobility, balance, and movement patterns contributing to your symptoms. Dr. Buza incorporates referrals into whole-patient care when appropriate, whether you’re managing an injury without surgery or recovering from a procedure. Rehabilitation progresses toward the movements your sport or everyday life actually requires.

Don’t Let an Injury Keep You Sidelined.
