Stay Active With Expert Orthopedic
Care in Midtown Manhattan

If an injury is keeping you off the field, out of the studio, or away from performing, Dr. Stephanie Buza offers board-certified orthopedic care built for how you move. A former classically trained ballet dancer herself, she brings sports medicine, hip preservation, and performing arts medicine training from Hospital for Special Surgery to Manhattan’s athletes, dancers, and performers — with a whole-patient approach that considers your training, technique, and goals, not just your diagnosis.

Meet Dr. Stephanie Buza

Dr. Stephanie Buza is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, hip preservation, and performing arts medicine. She completed her fellowships in sports medicine, shoulder surgery, and hip preservation at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and serves as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College.

At her Midtown location inside HSS Midtown on Lexington Avenue, Dr. Buza brings this specialized expertise to athletes, dancers, performers, and active people who want to move comfortably again. Her background as a pre-professional, classically trained ballet dancer gives her a keen understanding of biomechanics and the demands of performance. She uses that perspective to offer whole-patient care that considers your injury, lifestyle, and goals for being able to perform at a high level again.

Our Treatment Options in Midtown

Hip Preservation Surgery

If you’re young and active, replacing your hip is rarely where you want the conversation to start. Hip preservation focuses on keeping your natural joint while treating the problem behind your pain. Dr. Buza offers procedures for hip impingement, labral tears, dysplasia, cartilage damage, and tendon injuries, including minimally invasive hip arthroscopy when appropriate.

Knee Arthroscopy and Meniscus Surgery

A torn meniscus can make a previously reliable knee painful, swollen, or prone to catching and locking. Using a small camera (arthroscope) and instruments inserted through tiny incisions, Dr. Buza can see and treat the damage directly. Depending on your tear, she may repair the meniscus or carefully remove unstable tissue while preserving healthy cartilage whenever possible.

ACL Reconstruction

If your knee gives way when you cut, pivot, land, or change direction, getting back to your sport can feel out of reach. ACL reconstruction replaces the torn ligament with a tissue graft to rebuild stability. From there, rehabilitation progressively restores the strength, control, and movement you need before returning to higher-demand activities.

Tendon Repairs

A badly torn tendon can take away strength you once relied on for walking, running, jumping, or competing. Dr. Buza repairs the damaged tendon and, when necessary, reattaches it securely to bone. Recovery starts by protecting that repair before gradually restoring movement, rebuilding strength, and preparing your knee for more demanding activity.

Orthopedic Performing Arts Medicine

Dr. Buza knows firsthand that simply being “pain-free” may not be enough when you’re a dancer or performer. As a classically trained ballet dancer, she understands the control and precision your body needs. Her approach considers your injury alongside your biomechanics and performance demands, helping you work toward a confident, sustainable return to your art.

Non-Operative Care

Surgery isn’t automatically the answer. When appropriate, Dr. Buza may recommend corticosteroid injections, bracing, orthotics, activity modifications, or other conservative treatments. The aim is to reduce symptoms and improve function while keeping you moving, whether you’re managing arthritis, recovering from an injury, or trying to stay active.

Physical Therapy Referrals

Physical therapy can help bridge the gap between being injured and feeling like yourself again. Dr. Buza may incorporate a referral into your treatment to address mobility, strength, balance, and movement mechanics. As you improve, rehabilitation can progress toward what matters to you, whether that’s running, lifting, dancing, competing, or moving comfortably again.
