An Orthopedic Surgeon Who
Understands Movement

For Dr. Stephanie Buza, understanding movement began long before medical school. She grew up as a pre-professional, classically trained ballet dancer, an experience that sparked her initial interest in biomechanics, dance injuries, and the physical demands placed on active bodies.

Today, that background shapes how she cares for athletes, dancers, performing artists, and active people of all levels. Dr. Buza understands how frustrating it can be when pain keeps you away from rehearsals, practices, competitions, workouts, or simply your routine. Her goal is to understand the whole person, not just the injured joint, and develop a treatment plan that helps you get back to doing what you love.

Training in Sports Medicine and Hip Preservation

Dr. Buza earned her medical degree from NYU School of Medicine and completed her Orthopedic Surgery Residency at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. She then pursued two fellowships at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS): a Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship and a Hip Preservation Fellowship. This supports her specialized approach to injuries of the hip, knee, and shoulder.

Dr. Buza’s practice specializes in sports medicine and joint preservation, with particular expertise in hip preservation. Hip arthroscopy for hip impingement is a major focus of her practice. Her care also includes hip labrum repair, complex and open hip preservation, ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery, shoulder arthroscopy, tendon and soft tissue procedures, and more.

Surgery, however, isn’t automatically the answer for every single condition. Dr. Buza always considers and explores all possible non-operative treatments, including physical therapy, before surgery. She tailors your care to your diagnosis, activity level, and goals.

A Special Focus on Performing Arts Medicine

Dr. Buza has a special interest in performing arts medicine and serves as the Orthopedic Director of the HSS Performing Arts Medicine Collaborative. Her background in ballet gives her a personal understanding of the strength, mobility, and repetitive demands required of dancers.

Through the Performing Arts Medicine Collaborative, she also helps lead educational outreach, including the annual Day of Performing Artist Wellness. Her goal is to help performers receive musculoskeletal care that recognizes what returning to performance actually requires.

Professional Associations

Dr. Buza maintains active involvement in leading organizations across orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, and performing arts medicine. Her professional memberships include:

  • The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS)
  • The American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM)
  • The International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS)
  • The Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA)

Teaching the Next Generation

Dr. Buza serves as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and mentors students, residents, and fellows. She regularly teaches residents and fellows at HSS and attends and presents at national and international conferences focused on sports medicine, hip preservation, and performing arts medicine. This helps keep her connected to evolving research, surgical techniques, and approaches to orthopedic care.
